The Ottoman province of Icel, including the cities of Adana and Mersina, was occupied by French and British troops in early 1919.
For the first issues, the Ottoman definitive and commemorative postage stamps found in the post offices were handstamped using four different wooden stamps.
Shortly thereafter the 2nd issue followed in typography. In the interim period that followed the French withdrew their troops and the English occupied the southern part of Cilicia.
After the renewed full occupation by the French, Ottoman postage stamps were over-printed, followed by the final issues consisting of circulating French postage stamps with the country´s name overprinted and a value in
Turkish currency (1 Para = 40 Piaster).
At the beginning of 1921 the area was returned to Turkey. |
